How Sleep Regenerates Brain Cells

Scientists from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, have discovered that sleep increases the reproduction of cells that form myelin – the insulating material found on nerve cell projections in the brain and spinal cord.

During sleep, there are enzymes that repair brain cell damage caused by free radicals. Lack of sleep does not allow our brain to function normally because of the neurotransmitters, and neurons that are unable to rest or Regenerate. The brain relies on connectivity and neuronal responsiveness to function well, so it’s possible that less severe sleep loss could injure and even kill select populations of neurons in the brain.
